Abstract

Introduction: Psychiatric disorders and function of child and adolescent offsprings
of bipolar parents were compared to that of their peers with healthy parents.
Methods: In this case - control study, 52 bipolar parents along with their 72 children
were compared with 48 healthy and their 63 children. The subjects were selected by
simple and available methods. K-SADS, C-GAS were to collect data. Statistical analysis
was performed using Chi-square and t tests.
Results: Relative frequency of psychiatric disorders (at least one disorder) was 51.4
perecent (38 people) in cases and 20.6 perecent (13 people) in controls. The
difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). Both groups showed significant
differences in mood and anxiety disorders as well as ADHD. According to C-GAS
questionnaire the level of function was higher in the control group.
Conclusion: Psychiatric disorders and impairment of behavioral functioning among the
offspring of bipolar parents were higher that the controls.
